Due to strong community response to the local seed lending library concept, Penn and Robin have arranged to move the meeting across the street to the County Courthouse basement IF there is a big crowd - so everyone is welcome, the meeting is no longer limited to only those who know they want to actively help. See Penn's email below: Note the "homework" assignment if you plan to attend.

Westcliffe!!!! Get ready Westcliffians - we are ready to rock and roll!! The 1st Meeting of the Westcliffe Seed Lending Library is this Saturday - January 29th, at the Hansen House - 615 Rosita Ave - in Westcliffe - from 10-12 - N. of the courthouse - a yellow house. I can tell you right now it very well may be moved across the street to the courthouse basement as we are expecting a big crowd. So go to Hansen House and we will direct you if we need to.

Here's what to expect: Learn what the heck we're doing - and how you can help. We will begin the steps posted on the Richmond Seed Lending Library's website - as well as thresh seed. We will learn how while we hold the meeting. There are many ways to help - and many skills are needed.

If you are interested - PLEASE visit the Richmond Library's How To Create A Seed Lending Library page as this will give you a very clear idea of what needs to be done.

Come with high spirits - this is a most excellent, positive project that will enhance all of our lives by helping to restore food security here in the Valley.

Press Release

Southern Colorado Economic Development District is hosting a series of town hall meetings across

southern Colorado. The Custer County meeting will be held Wednesday, March 9th from 6:00 to 8:00

p.m. in the community room at Cliff Lanes.

The town hall discussions and planning sessions are part of the preparation of the ‘Comprehensive

Economic Development Strategy’. We will provide an overview of Custer County’s economy,

discuss the challenges and opportunities and identify projects to promote economic growth and

diversification. Attendees will be provided a keypad polling device so that we may obtain maximum

feedback from the citizens of your county.

The meeting in Westcliffe will be the ? town hall meeting to be held across a 12 county region. We

have had excellent feedback from attendees in other counties. The polling devices encourage people to

voice an opinion when they may otherwise prefer not to make a public statement. We will also provide

forms to identify projects that may be submitted after the meeting.

For further information on the meeting, please contact the CSU Extension Office at 783-2514 or visit website for more information.

Thank you and hope to see you there!

March 26 2011

You all asked for Permaculture Training that is on weekends and doesn't cost so much when we offered a full 2 week Permaculture Design Certificate Course in Westcliffe last summer. So here it is!

Thanks to a grant to CusterHealth! from the Colorado Health Foundation we are offering a Free Permaculture Workshop (Part 1) on Saturday, March 26, 9-4 and Part 2 on Saturday May 7, 9-4. Pre-registration required for both. In addition, there will be a free Introduction to Permaculture presentation on Friday evening, March 25, 6-7:30 at Cliff Lanes. These programs are part of Sustainable Ways' effort to develop a local food supply and CusterHealth! effort to get people outdoors exercising, working with others, and eating healthful foods.

The Introduction to Permaculture presentation is suggested for the participants in the Saturday Workshops and for anyone else who wants to know what Permaculture is all about. (a brief description of Permaculture is using OBSERVATION & COMMON SENSE FOLLOWING THE PATTERNS OF NATURE to provide for human needs in abundance without harming the earth.)

Permaculture Workshop Part 1 on Saturday, March 26 will teach the Permaculture Design process by assisting in creating and updated design of Cliffs' Park Community Garden to accommodate community needs, lessons from 2010, and a fruit tree orchard/forest garden to be planted May 11. Learning this process will assist you in designing your own garden using Permaculture Principles for maximum long term productivity. This is your opportunity to participate in planning for the community garden, important if you have or want a plot, want to help with the Common's garden, or just want a pleasant place to walk and will constitute the first community garden meeting of 2011.

Permaculture Workshop Part 2 on Saturday, March 26 will build on the March 26th workshop including finalizing the updated design of Cliffs' Park Community Garden and teach how to implement the design of your own garden using Permaculture Principles for maximum long term productivity with minimal use of water. It will include hands-on preparation of the community garden for fruit tree planting and site improvements to minimize the use of water.

June 24th-26th
Westcliffe Medival Fair
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Camping:
This will be a three day event, you can stay for one day or all three! Camping is allowed and encouraged on the property for the duration of the event. The 50+ acres also have hookups for campers and RVs if you think you might miss (or require) the comfort of the modern world. Please bring your own tents and camping equipment as they will not be provided for you, however, if you choose to you mig...ht sleep under the stars! Please be aware that the camping fee is included in the entry price.

Food:
Local restaurants will be providing food and drink (not included in entry fee). Feast is currently pending, however very probable. Food vendors are welcome! If you would like to have your own food vending stand please contact me to reserve a spot, if it is medieval themed I will allow it at no extra cost to the vendor. (sorry hot dog stands...) This is a wet event, alcohol will be sold by properly licensed parties. I am sorry but I cannot allow outside alcohol vendors to sell at this event.
Merchants:
Merchants are encouraged to attend! Having your own merchant spot is free, it does not cost anything to have your own shop. However, if you want a merchant spot you must tell me in advance. Merchants still must pay the entry fee but will not be charged extra to have a shop. We look forward to seeing the variety! If you sell weapons please note the Colorado laws (no under 18 for sharps...but their parents can buy it for them).

Archery:
The Westcliffe Medieval Fair is seeking a volunteer archery guild to head up the archery events. In return for providing well planned archery events and leadership the entry fee will be waived for the entire volunteer archery guild for the duration of the event. (That includes camping!)
Light Weapons:
The Westcliffe Medieval Fair is seeking a volunteer light weapons guild to head up the light weapons events. In return for providing well planned light weapon events and leadership the entry fee will be waived for the entire volunteer light weapons guild for the duration of the event. (That includes camping!)
Heavy Weapons:
The Westcliffe Medieval Fair is seeking a volunteer heavy weapons guild to head up the heavy weapons events. In return for providing well planned heavy weapon events and leadership the entry fee will be waived for the entire volunteer heavy weapons guild for the duration of the event. (That includes camping!)
Entertainment:
Entertainers are more then welcome to attend! Musicians, Dancers, and Fools (etc) will be given food vouchers by staff for providing exceptional entertainment for others upon staff discretion! Food vouchers for making people happy! Does it get any better then that?!

Medical:
Does your barony have a medical guild? Does this guild have certified nurses? Doctors? EMTs? If so then your guild might also qualify for a waived entry fee in return for volunteer services. This is not a necessity though as we will be providing on call EMTs if no guild steps up to take this responsibility.
Cost:
So...What will this cost me? You might be thinking....well, the fees are broken down here-

Single Entry- 10 Dollars a day
Duo Entry (two people)- 15 Dollars a day
Family Entry (three or more related people)- 20 Dollars a day

[All of the above prices include entry, parking, camping, insurance, merchant spot (if applicable) and tournament entries.]

When you arrive at the Fair Grounds you will be lead to the parking area, directly off the parking area you will find the sign in desk, this is where you will pick up your camping approvals and your event tags. If you are a merchant you will be shown your merchant spot after you sign in. If you have to leave a day or two early not to worry- friendly staff will check how many days you paid for and refund any extra before you leave.

Also note:
Campfires are currently pending approval by the Custer County Sheriffs and Fire Departments. No promises here but we are trying our hardest! Further note - this is not an official SCA event. However, once I receive a rough estimate of attendants I will be purchasing insurance. If campfires are approved your entry fee money will be stretched to accommodate the payment of a full time fireman to monitor any fires (No extra charge for attendants). This is a not for profit event, and if it goes well and the turnout wishes it this will become an annual event!

If you would like to volunteer in any way, or would like to host an event at the fair that I have not mentioned previously feel free to contact me. I welcome and encourage all suggestions or advice.

If you require any further information, (or if I forgot something) or are interested in becoming a recognized volunteer guild, or even a promising merchant please contact me
